This website hosts comprehensive e-content learning materials for students of K.R. Mangalam University. The course Media Laws and Ethics is designed to provide learners with an in-depth understanding of the legal frameworks and ethical principles governing media practices in contemporary society, with special emphasis on the challenges posed by digital transformation, platform governance, and emerging communication technologies.

In the present media landscape, the role of law and ethics has become increasingly significant as media operates across digital and global platforms. Issues related to freedom of speech, privacy, data protection, misinformation, intellectual property rights, and regulation of digital content have become central to media discourse. The expansion of social media, online journalism, and OTT platforms has further complicated the regulatory environment, making ethical decision-making a critical skill for media professionals.

This course enables students to critically examine the intersection of media, law, and ethics, and understand how regulatory frameworks influence media content, practices, and accountability. It introduces learners to constitutional provisions related to media, important legislations, and regulatory bodies governing media in India and globally.

The course covers key areas such as freedom of expression and reasonable restrictions, media regulations and censorship, defamation, contempt of court, obscenity laws, copyright and intellectual property rights, and cyber laws. It also addresses contemporary issues including fake news, digital surveillance, algorithmic bias, data privacy, and ethical dilemmas in digital journalism and content creation.

A significant component of the course focuses on ethical frameworks and professional standards in journalism and media industries. Students will explore concepts such as objectivity, fairness, accountability, public interest, media responsibility, and ethical reporting practices. Case studies and real-world examples will be used to analyze legal disputes and ethical challenges faced by media organizations and professionals.

Through critical readings, legal analysis, case studies, and interactive discussions, the course encourages learners to develop a strong foundation in media law and ethical reasoning. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the complex legal and moral landscape of modern media.

By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of media laws and ethical principles, enabling them to practice responsible journalism and content creation while adhering to legal standards and societal expectations.

This course is particularly relevant for students aspiring to careers in journalism, digital media, public relations, advertising, content creation, media management, and policy research, providing them with essential legal awareness and ethical insights necessary for professional success.
